Mountain Retreat No. 1

Mountain Retreat

The project included two constructions, a large two-storey addition to the main house - a 2,000 square foot log building, and a new free standing pool house, attached to the existing tennis court.

The new house addition program called for a new living room, master bedroom with en suite bathroom, breakfast room, and alterations to the adjacent existing spaces. The use of large horizontal planking on the exterior recalls the banding of the logs, but was purposely stained dark charcoal to contrast with the red stained logs. Also contrasting with the rustic log building, the interiors are modern, simple, light-filled spaces, using maple, pear wood, natural stone, corian and glass block.

Based on the success of the addition, the owner engaged us to design a new pool house, to be situated adjacent to the tennis court. The new spa doubles as a changing facility for the tennis court, and includes a shower, sauna and washroom.

Oriented east-west, the building is perfectly positioned to optimize passive solar heating and natural illumination and cross ventilation. The entire south wall is shaded by a cedar pergola to prevent over-heating of the interior spaces. In keeping with the new exterior finishes to the house addition, the exterior finishes to the pool house are mainly stained cedar planks, and colour-matched metal roofing.
