Leduc No. 1

Leduc Residence

The house is located on a cul-de-sac, on a steeply sloped half-acre lot. The southern property line is approximately 70 feet above the street at the northern property line. The grade slopes down from south-east to north-west. The rear south yard has been left in its natural state.

The Owner-Builder wanted a large contemporary house of approximately 5,500 square feet of finished space (including the lower level). The site, program and Owner request for a bold architectural expression have created a multi-faceted building.

The aesthetic and functional design challenges included a strong desire for a contemporary building using lots of glass, open space planning and bold forms; gallery space for a large collection of original contemporary art; northern views to the Ottawa River and ravines; four bedrooms each with their own bathroom; a sun filled central two-storey space (three storeys in part) and site planning to allow for a variety of gardens and activity areas. The entry sequence involves a lot of climbing so attempts were made to add drama, views and spatial variety to highlight the climb. In juxtaposition of the rectilinear structural form of the house, curvilinear wall surfaces direct movement and enclose space.
