Giroux / McAlpin No. 1

Giroux / McAlpin Residence

The design intentions for this residence were very straightforward; to create a modern house with casual elegance in an open plan, and to orient the major rooms to capture the long views from it’s mountain-top site, across miles of hills and valleys, while minimizing it’s impact on the landscape.

The technical issues were less straightforward. The site was rugged, with exposed rock outcropping and heavily covered with trees. Tree clearance was minimized and rock boulders were blasted to create a building site. The building form was made compact by being two stories high and reducing circulation areas to a minimum.

The house was an open plan with generous room sizes to accommodate a middle-aged childless couple. Remarkable features include: the panoramic view windows along the entire wall of the dining and living areas; custom designed and built maple hardwood central stair (with open risers, painted steel guard rails, and maple hand rails); custom designed and built kitchen and bathroom cabinetry; custom designed copper fireplace mantel; large cedar-lined screened porch; and unique master-bathroom (large sunken whirlpool tub, double glass, enclosed shower and cantilevered counter cabinet).
