Tory Building No. 1

Tory Building Renovations

The Tory Building is the first building constructed on the Carleton University Campus, in 1959. Although considered a very advanced building design at the time of construction, it has now reached an advanced state of ageing.

Our scope of work involved the total demolition at the exterior walls on the two projected parts of the third floor, on the east and west sides of the building, and the re-construction using advanced building materials (including heat-absorbing glazing and porcelain enamel metal cladding.)

We also designed an addition (below the east projected foyer) comprising three classrooms, with sloping floors.

The work was complicated by antiquated electrical and mechanical systems and concerns about the aesthetic integration of the new work.
