Carleton Housing Study
The problem was to design a housing infill development, programmed to provide the maximum practical number of rooms. The distribution of room across the southern part of the residential precinct developed from the strategies to preserve the open space as much as possible, to create active and adaptive outdoor courtyards (controlled recreation spaces), to capitalize on the existing services and tunnel connections, and to create building forms compatible with the existing site and buildings context. On the premise that this study would show the maximum practical development on the site, the consultant illustrated four potential building components.
The increased demand for support services by the additional residents from these first couple phases will necessitate the expansion of support services and construction of the ground floor additions to the Commons Building. The tower of Building C may be developed with the Commons podium, or in a later phase.
